I have been keeping company with Sadness today.
Sadness was a frequent guest last year. When the new year brought new loss, he set-up camp. I did not invite him, but he does not leave.
Most of the time, I find his company bearable. He is not usually oppressive. Present, but only passively imposing himself. Most days, I hold my focus on Happiness, and Sadness lurks in the shadows. I can almost convince myself he isn’t even there.
Then I turn a corner just a moment too soon, and come face-to-face with my old enemy. A painful confrontation. I am suddenly reminded of all that is lost, and Happiness is unseated.
Happiness is always fleeting.
Ah, but I have learned not to depend on Happiness. She is my fickle friend. Hope is my true and steady friend; always near. I take her hand and face Sadness down.

Three Ways to Guard Our Faith
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 1017, NKJV So, how do we guard our faith? I think these are three tried and true ways to do it. Remember, it’s God’s will we guard our faith, so He will help us in the process. As we seek Him, He will…

Saturday Evening Post, 4/6/19
It’s an early Spring for us here in New England, and today was a beautiful day. The whole week, really, has been lovely. I am still hoping for one more snow day, but I’m also thinking about how much I want to get into the garden. Our schedule tempts us not to garden at all,…

Something New
Lucy (my granddaughter) has some allergy issues, and seems to do best with baby foods that have nothing added—no citric acid or ascorbic acid or whatever else they add to those little jars. They do make baby food that is just the fruit or vegetable, but those are kind of expensive. So, I thought I…

With All My Heart
I came across a bunch of Christmas Cookie Campaign containers and instructional cards in the shed recently. The Christmas Cookie Campaign was a huge event we held every year at the local correctional facilities. Seeing those cards and containers brought back a lot of memories. It was a massive undertaking—exhausting, demanding, costly—and I loved every…

That One Time, When We Made Music
Once upon a time, before we had ever heard of New Brothers Fellowship, we were on another mission. For about 15 years, the Holy Spirit gave Doug songs. There weren’t many, but they came regularly. His fingers would start playing a melody, and the words would just come.* This went on, until it didn’t. That was…

Kick Off Those Shoes!
Women don’t lie about being abused. There is too much shame attached. Of course, this isn’t to say there aren’t women who will lie, so maybe I should qualify my statement: I have found that a woman in a marriage she values and wants to keep, to a man she loves and believes in, is…

Write Your Own
Hey, married people. Just a reminder: you are one in the spirit. What you do impacts each other, which is why you are allowed/expected/obligated to speak up and act out on behalf of one another’s life, health, spirituality, well-being, etc. If you don’t want to be accountable to anyone, or for anyone, move into a…

Little White Lies

10 Very Good Reasons to Shower Her with Flowers
