I have been keeping company with Sadness today.
Sadness was a frequent guest last year. When the new year brought new loss, he set-up camp. I did not invite him, but he does not leave.
Most of the time, I find his company bearable. He is not usually oppressive. Present, but only passively imposing himself. Most days, I hold my focus on Happiness, and Sadness lurks in the shadows. I can almost convince myself he isn’t even there.
Then I turn a corner just a moment too soon, and come face-to-face with my old enemy. A painful confrontation. I am suddenly reminded of all that is lost, and Happiness is unseated.
Happiness is always fleeting.
Ah, but I have learned not to depend on Happiness. She is my fickle friend. Hope is my true and steady friend; always near. I take her hand and face Sadness down.

Happy Anniversary to My Elkanah
To mark our 32nd wedding anniversary, I thought I would share some photos. It’s kind of an odd assortment. I just chose pictures that stood out to me and offer a glimpse into our past. As we move into our future, I am just so thankful for this man I see these days as my…

Let’s Talk about Ravi
If you go to the RZIM.org website, you can read a report on the illicit behavior of Ravi Zacharias. Admittedly, no one wants to read this report. Some may think it’s wrong to read it, or even talk about it. I understand. Trust me: this has been extremely difficult for me. I take no pleasure…

Sunday Worship
I remember my Mother worshiping God. More than I remember anything else about her, I remember that. When I was just nose-high to the pew, I would look up at her during worship with a mix of respect and curiosity. As she would rise to worship God, something about her changed. There was no warming-up for…

It’s Not the Doing
How are you today? My day started well enough, but as the minutes ticked by I began to feel pretty stressed-out. The thing that sent me over the top was the Saxophone Player’s text asking if I’d like to go to breakfast. Suddenly, my stress shot through the roof. Well, that’s just not right! Going…

The Devil’s Playbook
The Devil has a plan. For each and every one of us, he has a plan for our demise. Our destruction. He is on a unrelenting mission, you see, to defeat the work of Christ in each of our lives. He could not keep Christ from achieving His victory on the cross, so he turns…

A Dumb Movie and Bad Company
EDIT on 5/9/19 I had my dates wrong. I’ve been sharing how I came to understand God’s call on my life to be my husband’s help meet. It started with a post in October called Six Months. The second post was My Filthy Rags. As I was editing the third and last post of this testimony, I…

Sunday Worship
This song soothes my spiritual aches and pains. No matter the cares and burdens I may have carried in with me, this song gently leads me into a place of worship. When I am worshiping Jesus, there is nothing else that matters in the world. “Worshipping at the piano one day, this song started with…

“Does the Preacher Smell?”
There is no preacher, Bible teacher, or minister who is perfect. We should not expect to agree with them on everything, or to even like them that much personally. In fact, sometimes their ministry style might even be disagreeable to us. Maybe, they aren’t compelling, or too emotional? Do their words stumble out of their…

Starting the New Year
If working hard means getting a good start to the new year, then I think Doug and I have a lot to look forward to in 2019. We took a working vacation over Christmas and the New Year, which meant we worked at home only, no outside appointments. We stayed up late, and slept as…

10 Reasons to Study Bible Prophecy
Some folks resist the study of Bible prophecy, because so much of it confuses them. Or, they don’t believe anyone can really know or understand it. If even great theologians disagree, who are they to think they can know it? Or, they think they know enough: they know they’re born again and going to heaven,…

Personality Tests, Part 2
The upstairs neighbor popped her head in today and was telling me a little about her day. She said, “I like to _______________, because I’m a __.” I don’t like labeling myself. I think other people label me enough, so I feel no need. Plus, I like to keep my options open. You know what…

I’m a 14.
I just took a personality test. It’s the latest thing. My daughter mentioned it last week, “I’m a ___ and Tim’s a ___,” she laughed. I had no idea what she was talking about, until I looked at my Instagram today. Others were sharing their results of some test, and I realized it’s what was…
