I have been keeping company with Sadness today.
Sadness was a frequent guest last year. When the new year brought new loss, he set-up camp. I did not invite him, but he does not leave.
Most of the time, I find his company bearable. He is not usually oppressive. Present, but only passively imposing himself. Most days, I hold my focus on Happiness, and Sadness lurks in the shadows. I can almost convince myself he isn’t even there.
Then I turn a corner just a moment too soon, and come face-to-face with my old enemy. A painful confrontation. I am suddenly reminded of all that is lost, and Happiness is unseated.
Happiness is always fleeting.
Ah, but I have learned not to depend on Happiness. She is my fickle friend. Hope is my true and steady friend; always near. I take her hand and face Sadness down.

Don’t Trust the Devil with your Kids
TobyMac is a Christian musician. Our family has enjoyed his music for many, many years. He was the founder of the group D.C Talk, which was a groundbreaking Christian group in the 1990’s. His impact on contemporary Christian music can’t be overstated. His impact on the industry must be respected. He influenced many musical artists.…

Every Tool in the Box
“Oh, no.” I could hear from the tone of the Saxophone Player’s voice that something really bad had just happened. Doug was installing a new shower head we’d received for Christmas, when the water pipe that pokes out from the shower wall broke off right into his hand. It didn’t unscrew off, mind you. It…

Did Michelle Williams Just Eviscerate the Pro-Choice Movement, or Was That My Imagination?
Did Michelle Williams just eviscerate the Pro-Choice movement, or was that my imagination? Did she just say that her abortions were elective, not for the safety of the mother or because the child was at risk? Did she just say that she needed abortions, so that she could have unprotected intercourse with anyone at anytime?…

In the winter of Hannah’s 5th grade year, a fellow PTA mom invited me to join a Bible study she attended. I agreed to join her. Our church did not have a women’s Bible study, and I knew my spiritual life was in rough shape. Plus, I felt ashamed to reject her invitation. The Bible…

Gluten-Free Shortbread and My Make-Believe Cottage
I love to bake. Shortbread cookies are probably my favorite cookie of all the cookies. For a million years I used the recipe from my Betty Crocker cookbook, then began to experiment and made a few changes that I thought made it the best shortbread ever. And, then, I learned that wheat and my body…

Take Ten
“Friendly suggestions are as pleasant as perfume.” Proverbs 27:9 (TLB) I think it’s important for everyone to give themselves a break. Literally, give yourself ten minutes to do nothing. No matter how busy your life is, how behind schedule you are, how much is left on your list—give yourself permission to take a break. No…

Our Little Bubba
I am blessed to have two grandchildren, a Lucy and an Isaac. Today, Isaac is seven-months old. Being His Help Meet
“The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain.” (Proverbs 31:11) There is a lot that can be said of spiritual accountability. Saturday Evening Post: 1/27/18
G R E E N S Ate a bunch of spinach this week. That made me happy. R E D This crossed my path on Facebook this week and made me see red—the red marker I wanted to use to blot it out! This is a terribly wrong message for at least three reasons. The…

ACV!
Blah blah blah apple cider vinegar blah blah blah-blah blah. There are more than enough words already written about the benefits of drinking ACV, so I’m not going to add to the clog. I will just say that it makes a difference for me. If you’re curious, do your research. It might really be worth…

Fit For A King
“Maybe, he’ll play his saxophone for the Lord one day,” she suggested. I scoffed. Wasn’t it enough to just believe this atheist man could get saved? Couldn’t he just be a Christian who was also a jazz musician? Did I have to believe God for two impossible things? Oh, she called it, though. She had the…

Mexican Cornbread Pie
After being sick, I was craving comfort food. Mexican Cornbread Pie, to be specific. I found this recipe in a women’s magazine very early in my marriage, and I have probably made it hundreds of times—maybe, a thousand times. I know. It’s ridiculous to imagine someone making and eating the same dish so many times,…
