I have been keeping company with Sadness today.
Sadness was a frequent guest last year. When the new year brought new loss, he set-up camp. I did not invite him, but he does not leave.
Most of the time, I find his company bearable. He is not usually oppressive. Present, but only passively imposing himself. Most days, I hold my focus on Happiness, and Sadness lurks in the shadows. I can almost convince myself he isn’t even there.
Then I turn a corner just a moment too soon, and come face-to-face with my old enemy. A painful confrontation. I am suddenly reminded of all that is lost, and Happiness is unseated.
Happiness is always fleeting.
Ah, but I have learned not to depend on Happiness. She is my fickle friend. Hope is my true and steady friend; always near. I take her hand and face Sadness down.

When We Will Really Become Like Jesus
I’ve been thinking about something: I’ve been thinking about how the Son of God became like us, and how we will one day become like Him. 1. God the Son was originally an eternally alive Spirit. He was not created, not born. He was always. 2. After the Fall of mankind, we needed a Savior.…

Honor Thy Mother
I want to share a video with you. I just watched it again for the first time in seven years. It’s a video of my mother, and I hope you will watch it to the very end. I don’t really know what inspired me to conduct an interview, but I’m sure it was the Holy…

Counting to 30
We started the weekend trying to define the years of our life. We wanted to pick a highlight or hallmark from each year. Some years it was easy to do, others were sort of a blur. A few years, we just didn’t want to remember. We also found that it was hard to pick a word…

Bring It On, New Year!
As I think about the New Year, I just cannot resist the temptation to look back at 2016. I don’t want to speak ill of the dead, but this past year was not my favorite. I’ve been looking forward to a new calendar! However, I have no reason to think 2017 won’t be full of the…

Today’s Journal – 11/12/16
Outside my window…it is dark and cold. That’s all I know. There is also a lot of yard work waiting for me to do, but I’m trying not to think about it (see below). I am thinking about…everything I keep putting-off, because something more important happens. I don’t like it. I lack focus these days, and…

Let The Gardening Begin!
Do you see that little patch of sunny dirt? We discovered that this is the sunniest spot in the yard, and it was just a weed “garden.” So, we decided to clear it out and plant some vegetables. (Sunflowers against the fence.) It needs some compost, and we’ll have to get a longer water…
